Week 10

As we commence with the 10th week of classes, it is essential that we ask ourselves "have we made a genuine committment to the AP Literature and Composition course." Take a look at your course syllabus; see if you have met my expectations of you. I expect and maybe even demand excellence; anything less is not accepted. The great John Wooden coined the idea that hard work and enthusiasm equate success...be passionate, work hard, and if you hit the metaphoric brick wall, do not turn away; that is too easy. Instead, figure out a way to break down the wall, overcome the obstacle...you will be a better person for it! Have a good week...SMILE too!

Important Assignments:

11/5: IR in class assessment.
11/7: Timed writing on The Awakening.
11/9: Blog your initial impressions on the playwright William Shakespeare and the tragedy Othello. Remember your blog must be at least 6 sentences for credit.
11/9: Independent Reading choice due.

Here are your assignments/Agenda for Week 10:

If you have questions about these assignments, please leave a comment or email me directly. Remember, I will check the blog until 9:59 pm. You know I need my Seinfeld fix.

Hey Mr. DiLeo.

I usually have trouble reading works of Shakespeare's, and I doubt this will be an exception. However, it does look more interesting than other works of his. The background information says it focuses on a few central themes and characters, so it shouldn't be too difficult to comprehend the main purpose of the book.

Also, I did horrible on that quiz. Hopefully I won't do as horrible reading the book.

Orhan Panuk was amazing! I wish you could have been there, Mr. DiLeo. Oh, and I hope you didn't lose part of your soul or something while grading all those stacks of AP/IB papers I saw. I respect anyone who has the patience to deal with so many different writing levels/styles in a relatively short amount of time. *applauds you* Can't wait for Othello!

Stacy just reminded me of something, on a more humorous note. Do you know Mrs. Collesano's wonderful writer' stickers? Do you think you could steal one and slap it onto one of my papers? I'm jealous of the people who have them... A personality flaw, I know, but present nonetheless (it's what makes me a more believable character!). :)

Hey Mr. DiLeo, How's it going? I guess it doesn't do much good if I check the blog at the end of the week, does it? Well, anyways, I hope your headache goes away, and that you have a good weekend. -^_^- I'm excited for Othello, but it may lose my intrest eventually. Oh, and don't pay attention to Olivia, she's just competative when it comes to writing, you know, with it being her thing and all...

What's going on? Oh, wait, yeah: it appears I don't know my Shakespeare quite as well as I thought. Well, at least I learned things (which will promptly be forgotten, I'm sure). I'm being insightful right now. This is weird, Mr. DiLeo; I'm posting a comment to you right now, but your right there. Oh well.

Looking forward to Othello, Iago is deliciously evil (I used the word delicious, rawr).

Ramble ramble ramble. Done.

{{maybe I should start reading Othello...yeah}}

Oh, I didn't post this yesterday because I went to sleep when I got home; Orhan Pamuk was pretty awesome!

Hello Mr. DiLeo and everyone! My first impressions on the Othello were good, although there is some difficulty in reading in, mainly because the language is somewhat different from contemporary English (especially since I'm a foreigner!). However, Shakespeare's works interest me, and I'm looking forward to reading his other works after Othello!

Blogger hglick3 said...

Well, I guess 45% is alright, seeing as I really haven't had any experience with Shakespeare up until this point. I'm excited to finally put one of his works under my belt! I got started on Othello last night, and was impressed (and somewhat taken aback) by how fast things get going. Two pages in, and we've already got conspiracy schemes brewing? Now that's a killer opening.

I'm looking forward to reading this because the plot summary we read seems interesting. I did so badly on the quiz i got like 55% right by pure luck. Also when i first started reading the book it looked a bit confusing but the right hand page helps. Prior to this i have had little experience with Shakespeare so I'm not quite sure what to expect. Please don't give us so many essays to write on this. Well bye i have to get a start on annotations so i don't fall behind, again.

Hey Mr. DiLeo I'm a little late im sorry. My first attempt at the Shakespeare quiz i got and 95%. I really like reading Shakespeare even though it is difficult to understand sometimes. Othello is already turning out to be an interesting read.

I think the first scene is very important to help portray initially what characters personalities will be like. Already we are introduced to Iago who seems to be a backstabber and to Roderigo, a lovestruck man acting selfishly. Desdemona's father is probably an overprotective father or just does not like Othello. This is explained by the elopment if Desdemonas father approved of Othello they would not have had to elope. Iago it looks like is out to take down Othello for personal gain but what the personal gain would be is still uncertain. Roderigo on the other hand is probably only feeling bitter towards Othello because he got the woman he loves and is falling in with Iago because Iago has negative thoughts towards Othello, Roderigo is probably not a bad person.

There you go Mr. DiLeo my thoughts so far on Othello!
